Taken off the Band Facebook group just in case a minority of you aren't in the facebook group:

Dear band, as much as the teachers say the results are not that important, unfortunately for me it is, and to a certain extent, the teachers. Thus the only way forward is not one where you have to work harder, but to work smarter. It begins the next time we meet on Fri for Canberran's Day rehearsal.

It begins first with DISCIPLINE. Reporting to band room as soon as you have cleared your classes, getting changed and instruments set up (some of you take your own sweet time to head to the toilet to wash your mouthpieces!). Warming up on your instrument - there are so many things you can do to help you warm up, and this DOES NOT include banging on the drum set. Warming up must be treated as a revision of skills learnt e.g. scales, common rhythms, etc.

FUNDAMENTALS of music - have I not stressed this enough already. Breathing, tone, technique - expect to see a lot of these issues raised by the judges in their comments to you in the next few weeks or so. The next few months will be spent on playing EVERY SINGLE NOTE AND PAGE in the "I RECOMMEND" book. You must learn to read and understand and execute all the exercises in this book, before you even begin to learn any piece of music. Music is still a foreign language to most of you, and you must try your best to learn it just like you learn English in school. Percussionists will learn their "I RECOMMEND" on mallets.

Seems that the Harmony Director is not enough to train your LISTENING SKILLS. I will need everyone to make an investment, for your own benefit (only Sec 1s, 2s and 3s). All Woodwind and Brass players will need to purchase YOUR OWN INDIVIDUAL TUNER with microphone - the cheapest and quite reliable KORG CA-1 (the one that I use) will cost something like $30 to $35, but we may get a discount if we are able to purchase a big number at a time. It will be of a great help anytime you play your instrument, whether in full band practice or at home, as you can check to see if you are in tune or not. It will help in your listening skills. As for Percussionists, you willl need to own a pair of DRUMSTICKS (maybe $15-$20) and a practice pad (see if I can find the $10 one, they usually cost much more). Please see me or the teachers if you have problems coming out with the money and we'll see how best to help you at that. I will like everyone to have these items just before we break for the mid-year exams, so that we can immediately start using them. I'm sure you'll take very good care of them, because you own them.

SECTIONALS - I need not say any more. That's the time where you spend learning new pieces or practicing your assigned pieces until you get every single note right, be it yourself or as a section, or even between sections (e.g. flute and clarinet). BE FOCUSED. BE SERIOUS. BE PRODUCTIVE. If you get bored or get stuck, go back to "I RECOMMEND", do a few exercises, and head back to practicing your piece. If you are smart enough, you will want to find exercises in "I RECOMMEND" that closely resembles whichever part of the music you are practicing. If all these are in place, we do not need much time for full band (meaning, not even Saturday morning rehearsals).

Lastly, COMMITMENT. Face it, BAND is an activity requiring a rather heavy commitment - till now I am proud to say about myself that I have never unnecessarily skipped any band practice (am talking about my outside bands) just because I didn't feel like going - it's only because I have another rehearsal or engagement. That is because I value every single band practice, because that's the only time I have these days to learn my pieces. You know, for that West Winds concert in March that you guys attended, we only had ONE.... ONE official sectional, and that was because full band had to be cancelled as the conductor was sick - yet we made sure we learnt our parts individually to the required performing standard. This is commitment for you - commitment to attend the required rehearsals, and commitment to learn whatever piece that was decided for us to play. You only have to show me commitment, and at the end of the day should you still fail for some reason, commitment is what we value more, not the result.

Please make sure everyone in the band reads this, so that we have the same understanding of what needs to be done ASAP to improve ourselves.

I sincerely thank everyone of you, band members and teachers, for all your hard work towards this SYF - as a conductor is but nothing without his musicians.

CSS Band!

After Saturday's band practice, I'll need you guys to make some notes ~

This is what I feel can be improved, and worked on during sectionals.

(apparently i'm a brass player, so i only took note of the brass section. hahah.)

The Singapore Flyer

Brasses,

- Trombones

1) Please do not scream your notes at bar 2 to 7 and take note of the off-beats.

2) At bar 9, please tongue and accent your notes, but do not scream, again.

3) Please do not slow down at the beginning.

- Horns

(this section particularly has more notes because... i play the horn. so, yeah. not because i'm pinpointing ok!)

1) Please count your notes, and accent at bars 19 and 25 (must come out at this part!).

2) At the pick up beat of A, please make sure your E is in-tune with the melody.

3) Part C, D, H, I, please play together with the tambourine and listen to the melody.

(If you can't, practise with filling the quarter rests with F)

4) Bars 7 to 9 and bars 97-99, please do not rush and tongue properly. Accent the last 4 crotchets.

5) At bar 24, take note of the one beat rest.

- Trumpets

1) Please do not scream your notes at bar 2 to 7 and take note of the off-beats.

2) At bar 9, please tongue and accent your notes, but do not scream, again.

3) The melody can be a little smoother.

4) Please do not slow down at the beginning.

- Euphonium

1) Slur your notes at E, do not detach the high notes.

(solution to this problem : breathe, breathe, breathe!!)

2) At C & H, do not play the marcatto parts sloppily. Sforzando ~

3) At 67, take note of the ritardando.

- Tuba

1) Take note of parts C and H.

2) And 67, take note of ritardando.

3) Do not over play your parts.

In general,

1) Be careful of your intonation and tune at 63.

(Remember parts 1, 3, 5? Which is the bar that sounds most off?)

2) Do not overpower the woodwinds.

3) TAKE NOTE OF YOUR DYNAMICS.

(Remember what Mr Rasull said? What other to work on apart from timing and intonation? Yes, dynamics.)

Play soft at parts you're supposed to play soft, and play loud when you're supposed to.

Hey band! Happy new year!
A new year, a new and improved band, and let's resolve to work hard for both band and our studies, ok?
This year is one very crucial year, because SYF is coming!! Ahhh!!

Alright, i just want to update something.

Ngee Ann Poly Concert Band will be having a concert on the 9th jan 2011, please contact either Cruyff or Wai Ling for the tickets if you're interested. Tickets are at 12 bucks each.
For more details, please visit here.

I highly recommend that the band should go to concerts in order to broaden our knowledge of how different bands play and also to compare what bands have that we don't, so we can work on what we're lacking to close up the gap and improve.

well, monday and tuesday's practices have been cancelled.
instead, practices are on the wednesday,(09/09/2009 [nice date, eh.]) and thursday (10/09/2009)

wednesday : 8-12.30pm
thursday - 1.30 - 4.30 pm.
Attire : PE T-shirt and school bottom.

SYNOPSIS

For one night only, the accomplished Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra (TMSO) will deliver a concert of popular works under the baton of the distinguished and illustrious Kazuhiro Koizumi.

The orchestra is on tour to promote closer ties and cultural exchange between Tokyo and various cities around the world. Dubbed the Harmony Tour 2009 - 2010, TMSO will perform a dramatic piece from the famous opera Eugene Onegin, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, and Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor featuring soloist and award-winning local pianist Lim Yan.

TMSO was set up to mark the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1965 and has since grown to become one of Japan's foremost professional orchestras. It has won the Kyoto Music Award and received much international acclaim by performing in many countries including the former Soviet Union, Seoul, London, Berlin, Paris, China, Finland, USA and Beijing. Presently, Eliahu Inbal is Principal Conductor of TMSO. The orchestra performs over 150 concerts anually.

The concert of the night will be conducted by Kazuhiro Koizumi, Resident Conductor of TMSO. The multiple-award-winning maestro has also conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London, the Berlin Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Symphony Orchestra

i think the forum is helpful, cos we get to meet and make online friends with people who share the same interest and passion for band, and to learn from people.
like for example, they have this performing and auditioning section that will or might help us overcome the nervousness problem that will always hinder us from getting our desired results.
or instrument sections to talk about the instruments and instrument problems.
or even how to do warm ups, how to do selfimprovise, how to fix our embouchure right..
what to do and what not to do..
or just ask people on advice.

how did you feel when the other bands present were to cry tears of joy, shouts of joy, cheers of joy because they have done their best while you guys were all crying your lungs, hearts, diaphragm *insert organ here*?

Certificate of Participation!

COP, in other words, is 'Thank you for participating.'

Ms Mariah and Mrs Lee were absolutely right. We deserve this COP.
COP attitude = COP band.

How do you feel upon hearing the result?
The once COD band.. Marching our way out the stadium proudly, heads held high, crying with joy, performing so proudly to the school late at night, showing that CSSB is best..
Now a COP band.. Hiding our faces from the other schools which were celebrating their victories for attaining their goals, while we moved out the hall in silent mode, crying with disappointment and as soon as we reached band room, quickly took off our band uniforms so as to not let people know we are now a COP band member.

Mr Lee, Mr Kelvin, and teachers.. Are we appreciating them? Have we had a full attendance for practice before? When were we serious about band? And when will we be?

Mr Lee, Mr Kelvin, teachers and seniors may say we already tried our best. But think again.. Was that performance a standard of CSSB? Answer is No.
What for the conductors and teachers lie to us, telling us we are in between a silver and a bronze? What for Mr Lee repeated himself over and over again that Silver is our goal, Bronze.. easy peasy, any time also can..? They made those statements because we are really up to it and they have faith in us.
But today, CSSB had shown those who have 101% of faith and support for us, that we are not but just a COP band.

Are we going to change our COP attitude to a COD attitude and make a comeback in the next 2 years to come? Or are we going to stay happy with COP and be ashamed of ourselves again in the SYF '11 ? If we're aiming for a COP in SYF '11.. Tell the ones who are serious about band to not come and waste their time. Tell them no point working so hard when the rest of the band members heck about it. Tell Mr Lee and the teachers not to sacrifice for us anymore. We shall just meet up on the SYF day itself and play rubbish, like today. Anyway band is about unity. One die, all die. Not one work hard, and all enjoy. No such thing. And, dont ever point fingers saying who caused us to get this result. Blame on the whole band, blame the attitude of us, the band members. And most importantly, do something about it and not let this COP stuck with the band. Take today as a lesson learnt and wake up now.

Work hard people. Mr Lee, Mr Kelvin, teachers and seniors will always be there for us.
Give ourselves a target now and work towards it.
Show everyone CSSB is something. Make those who are proud of us proud. The next time we return from SYF, people will congratulate and not console us not to be sad.

I am sorry for not doing my part as a bm. But I trust and believe our band can do it and we are definitely not of COP standard.

Hi everyone! For some who do not know me, I'm your senior, Wei Teck...

I dont know how am I going to start this but let me be straight to the point. Tomorrow is the day and YES, we can make it! Silver is what we are getting if we put our 100% effort into the play!

Hence, dont give up alright. Tomorrow, you have one chance, one shot and its gonna be your best effort! Whatever happens, tell yourself that you have done your best and you have tried.

Good luck to all and see you tomorrow at the concert hall... I'll be your NUMBER 1 cheerleader when you guys perform. =]

Holding at Singapore Conference Hall (SCH), 7pm, tickets going at $10 each (table sale).
They are playing their SYF choice piece.

If you can make it, we go tgt k?! All go tgt!
SJI's date is the same as us. 2nd April! They are the 1st band, we're the 3rd.
I think this concert is worth going.

Ok, moving on.. I have received some comments about the band exchange ytd. I was told that 1st trombones were covering the whole band, blasting throughout! OMG. And also the brasses were drowning the woodwinds.

Guys we gotta do something about this. Can the brasses tone down a lil ?! Our band knows that our band's brasses are alot times stronger than the woodwinds but we just continue playing so loudly, like as if every single one of us wants to be heard and then blow our hearts and lungs out, neglecting the fact that we are a band, and that we must sound balanced and not compete against each other!

Yes, our band is small, and naturally we would want to play louder to get bigger sound. But big sound doesnt mean bad sound. Agree?

From now on, pls come for the remaining practices till our big day comes. We really have alot more to work on.

Like the Adidas slogan, Impossible is Nothing.
Silver isnt impossible if all of us put our hearts and souls tgt, and work towards our goal, just like how we persevered and achieved our COD for marching assessment. Maybe you would want to watch the video on youtube to recall how hard those intensive trainings were and the result we eventually achieved.

Remember the moment when we were announced.. 'Canberra Secondary School.... Certificate of Distinction!'

Remember how great that feeling was? Remember how all of us jumped, screamed and cried with joy?!
I am very sure no one would forget that very moment.

So, whether we get that COD kind of feeling again, its really up to us.

yesterday was our band exchange.
and it was horrible.
guys, come on.
if you're nervous, what makes you think the rest aren't?
if you are the only player in a particular instrument, what makes you think it gives you an excuse to play badly, or not come in at certain parts?
we're a small band, but we have big sound right?
that's great, but we have to play our parts well.
and please please balance your sound.
do not embarrass us, or drag each other down.
let's all help each other.
no more excuses like, " oh i'm nervous thats why i can't play'
we showed the seniors we can get distinction for our marching assessment, why not prove to them we can get more than a bronze, or a cop?
we have less than 10 practices, and not even a month till syf.
those who think that cos we're a small band, it's an excuse for us to :
- play horribly,
- not come in at certain parts,
- screw up because we are all nervous.
- or because there are many absentees thats why we should blame them.
it is not a matter of whether or not we can do it, it's a matter of whether or not we want to do it.
if you enter singapore conference hall with such an attitude and just play because we ask you do, then don't enter at all.
play with pride, people.
and show everyone we can do it.
as for those who think they're one of the best players on earth,
you have a lot to learn.
be humble.
let's not make all our efforts to waste.

can't believe we have less than a month and less than 10 practices, we still have people with a such nonchalant attitude, and their noses in the air.

Tmr after you guys buy the materials needed then go school do the thing ok? I'll ask Ms Mariah open the door so we can use the art materials from the band room to decorate. But you all must go buy 9 vanguard sheets or cardboard or whatever to do up the cards.

Arts Camp

Hey guys, as mentioned on fri, we will be having our arts camp on 18th and 19th of March. We are going to play some ice breaking games with the other cca. There will be 216 people in total (probably less than that because of the regular absentees from the various cca). But we will just group the people up according to the 216 people first.

So, there would be 12 groups, 18 people in each. And 6 stations, 2 in-charge to run each stations. 2 groups will play against each other in 1 station. Meaning, 1 in-charge to record score/timing for 1 group and another in charge to record score/timing for the other group. Something like that..

There will be 6 stations in total. So the 12 game facilitators will be paired up to plan and run the game, 2 to 1 station.
The order of sequence will be like, for eg:
Group 1 and 2 : Station 1-2-3-4-5-6
Group 3 and 4: Station 2-3-4-5-6-1
Group 5 and 6: Station 3-4-5-6-1-2
and so on, until all the 12 groups finish all 6 stations.

Station 1-in-charge will be Arziemah and Alan
Station 2-in-charge will be Evelyn and Lydia
Station 3-in-charge will be Vanessa and Auzaie
Station 4-in-charge will be Artiqah and Amalina(percussion)
Station 5-in-charge will be Daryl and Danial Charlotte
Station 6-in-charge will be Raja and DJ

You guys have to meet up tmr to plan/discuss the games.
Make it at Sunplaza Macdonald, 2pm, or earlier(you guys discuss among yourselves)

Main idea is to bond the people tgt. The games dont have to be over complicated. Simple ones will do. But everyone must be involved. No dangerous games pls.

Here are the things to be completed tmr.
1) Get into your pairs and think of games (can use our previous band games as reference)
2) Write down objectives of games
3) Write down CLEAR instructions of games
4) Things/materials needed for the games

The sec4s will come to help after our class.

Lastly, if you are not able to make it tmr.. Pls inform chinwen or fatin so that we can get replacement. Sorry for this last minute thing but we really got to do it asap because our arts camp is coming real soon! And we are unfortunately chosen to run the 'Game Time'..
I guess they chose us because we are the most fun-loving cca.. Correct not Band?! hehe.

If you cant make it for tmr, pls pls inform us. No punishments or whatever if you cant make it.

I'm hard to please, I was bloody confident you would barely get a Certificate of Merit but you proved me wrong.Well done.You definitely did 4 times better than in practice.

Hold your heads high band.You achieved something from nothing. You're a band Mdm Tan only dreamt of having. It feels good to be cheering with you guys at the carpark (the most unappealling place for a celebreation) and it feels even better seeing people looking at you guys celebrating. (THAT was the ONLY moment I felt that you guys were together as a band.Haha.)

And I saw one tuba player smiling so wide I can see his teeth! I just HAD to take the photo.(Hint:the ONLY tuba player)Hahaha.

YOYO, another senior is posting now. And this blog has changed quite a fair bit. Dropped by to make the blog alive again.

I guess you all have experienced thick and thin and you will expect that all stress you guys are experiencing now will just pay off! I know its just only days with the nerve-wrecking, foreboding feeling of the coming SYF. I think CSSSB lacks the exposure of performing in front of many people - just don't worry about anything else.

Its really what you will work for will pay off - the certificate is very secondary. I really think if success is to be counted in terms of money/certificate/medal worth, the world will be a sad place. Even if you guys will achieve a Certificate of Distinction/merit/participation, you must always realise that the important things in life are what are around you - the spirit of camaraderie amongst you.

SO, what i really feel on that SYF day la- just have fun!!

I feel the band needs not only listen to "RAH-RAH" music like those from composers like "Ed Huckeby", "James Swearingen", or "James Curnow", etc etc. Haha, its really time to move out from these kind of music that are of little value in music appreciation. Explore a variety of genres which I know alot of. Especially from composers like Bert Appermont, Ferrer Ferran, Vaclev Nelhybel, Nigel Clarke, Ottorino Resphigi (which i really feel there are more aesthetical variations in their compositions). And baroque/classical composers like Mozart, beethoven, verdi, vivaldi, Bach, can really just make you go brimming full of inspiration!

P.S, Listening to better Wind/Symphony Orchestra music more will improve your sense of intonation.

hello band. =)

U might find this weird,
coz this post is written by me,
ur senior, Tormimiiiiiiiii.

as a band member once,
it actuali saddens me that
i can neither be physically there
to help nor can i participate in the first place.

ya, im not a good speaker (or writer in this case).
but i jus hope that these words would count, in the long run.

Im very sure that during your days in CSSB,
you probably have learn something that
could have actuali change your life in any way.

Well, getting straight to my point,
in my days in CSSB, part of wat i had learn is,
the true meaning of UNITY.

We can't be united overnight.
It takes time for bonds between
pupils to strengthen.
This might seem contradicting,
but its actuali easy to be united.

in every incident, be it a happy or a disappointing one,
a glimmer of hope, for a chance of unity is always
there for us to grab.

Just a small positive comment or a minor act of concern
goes a long way.

a simple deed of helping to open the door,
helping another band member wash his/her mouthpiece,
even smiling to ur dear bandmates counts.

yes, every casual act of assistance
in these emergency weeks counts in building
up close rapport between every band member.

In these last few weeks,
lets put on the best effort
to practice whatever thats left.

whats a little pain,
compared to the festive
after the BIG DAY?

and better still, with the extra extra extra
hardwork injected in the practices,
imagine thejoy when the words "Certificate of Distinction"
is announced right after our school name.

And just realise, that all of this is POSSIBLE.
It is just up to us Band members.
So the only obstacle between us Band members and the Distinction Cert,
are ourselves.

yes, you are your worst obstruction
to your own goal.

Triple your effort in these few weeks.
And when the moment of truth comes,
we wont be disappointed.

For the upper secondary members,its your last chance, your last shot.
Give it your best.
Surely you want to leave the school
later (or 1-2 years later) knowing that u hv
made the school proud with your sincere contributions
to CANBERRA BAND during the marching assessments.

For the lower secondary members,
though you still have another chance,whatever the outcome during
the big day will greatly influence the
standard of the band in the consecutive years.
So im sure when one of you guys/girls are promoted
to be the drum major or band major next time,
u would like to lead a band full of committed members.
So lets start, NOW. GO!!!

yes, whatever happens,be it positive or negative news after the big day,
it will have a deep impact to the band.
remember, it is inevitable.
If its good news, be happy.
If not, dun be sad, life has its ups and downs.
Move on.

bear it in mind that the most
important thing is, the process
leading up to the BIG DAY itself.

Cherish the moments together.
You will miss it next time.

Sembawang Symphonic Winds is currently recruiting for new members. All young musicians between the ages of thirteen and eighteen are welcomed to join. But, we are NOT looking for players on project basis.

About Sembawang Symphonic Winds:
The Sembawang Symphonic Winds was
formed in February 2005 and inaugurated
in July 2005 by former Deputy Prime
Minister, Dr. Tony Tan, advisor of the
Symphonic Winds’ parent band, the
Sembawang Wind Orchestra, under
Sembawang Community Club.

The Sembawang Symphonic Winds cater
mainly to youths between the ages of
thirteen and eighteen. Its formation is
to encourage community service through
music making.

The Sembawang Symphonic Winds envisions
to create an environment fostering
music appreciation and awareness, in
the process enhancing creativity and
thinking skills. In line with the
Ministry of Education’s call for young
to be more actively involved in
community service, the Sembawang
Symphonic Winds aims to participate in
various community activities like
charity fund raisings, visits to old
folk homes and community outreach
programs and performances.

The Sembawang Symphonic Winds also
aspires to develop young musicians
towards musical excellence. It also
places a strong emphasis on character
building and interpersonal skills.

Through the Sembawang Symphonic Winds,
the Sembawang Community Club and the
Sembawang Wind Orchestra hope to cross
cultural boundaries, to appreciate and
encourage music culture heritage.

In July 2006, the Sembawang Symphonic
Winds participated in the 2nd Division
of the 1st National Band Competition
and was adjudicated by both local and
foreign musicians from Japan and
Thailand. The Sembawang Symphonic Winds
clinched the Gold award and attained
champion in the category.

It was just like last year when Mdm Tan was around (duh, she was around last year!).It was just like last year when we gave all we got for the marching assesment.It was just like 2 years ago when we blew all we can for the first ever SYF.It's just like this thursday that we would be doing it again, but this time, with a real challenge.Appearing after and before gold bands wouldn't be smooth sailing.All the best everyone.

I didn't know how else to motivate the band.This post sounds nonsense though.Work harder band.I wouldn't wanna waste my four years in school doing nothing.I'd be the happiest guy in this world if we got a silver or at least maintain a bronze!
